Eleanor Wiseman

Eleanor Wiseman

Eleanor has loved sports since a young age. She started playing field hockey at 7 years old after her school teacher encouraged her to play a team sport because she was too shy. That probably worked: many years later Eleanor isn’t as shy, (still) loves pushing herself athletically and has kept a strong sense of team spirit. Eleanor grew up in Belgium but went to college in the UK and moved to California in 2015 to start a PhD at U.C. Berkeley in development economics, which she is currently about to finish (fingers crossed!). Her research focuses on corruption and agriculture trade in East Africa.

After playing competitive field hockey throughout college, she switched to triathlon in 2014 and discovered cycling … which quickly became her favorite of the 3 sports. A knee injury in 2017-2018 led to a permanent break from running and pushed Eleanor to focus on cycling and bike racing. Since then, she hasn’t looked back and raced many of the Californian local road races and collegiate races, making her way up categories. In 2019, she had the opportunity to race bigger pro races around the US (Redlands, Cascade Classics, …) and fell in love with road racing. Since 2021, she is racing with Bingoal WB, a Belgian team, focusing on European pro races.

She discovered virtual riding/racing quite late, in 2020, when health issues forced her to stay inside. Skeptical at first, virtual riding and racing has helped her navigate the ups and downs of her cancer treatment, both physically and mentally and she is so grateful to have discovered it. She raced her first Premier League series with Saris | NoPinz during Season 1 of 2021-2022 Season and is so excited for more!

Interesting facts about Eleanor:

  • Has recently discovering the joys of gravel riding/racing

  • Loves long and hard racing: race of attrition over sprint finishes!

  • Loves carrots (dipped in mustard) – regularly eats 1 pound of carrots a day and has turned orange from the carotene

  • Recently secured a qualifying spot for the 2022 Zwift Worlds Championships by attacking in the last km of the race: sometimes risky moves pay off…
